Tête-à-tête: “a private moment together”
The wooden Tête-à-Tête garden benches by Comfy Chair are our most sociable outdoor furniture pieces. Tête-à-tête literally means “a private conversation”. As the name suggests, this Adirondack garden bench is designed for two people. Each wooden Tête-à-Tête consists of two Original Comfy Chairs connected by a small table. The shape of this table determines which Tête-à-Tête model you choose:
Rounded Tête-à-Tête
The table is narrower at the front than at the back. This subtly angles the chairs towards each other at the front, giving the furniture a gentle, rounded shape overall.
Straight Tête-à-Tête
The table is rectangular, meaning the chairs are positioned parallel to each other. This results in a clean, straight-lined design.
The table consists of two parts. The upper section connects the armrests of both chairs, while the lower section is fixed to the chair legs. The table is permanently attached and mounted to the Adirondack chairs using screws. This fixed construction ensures extra stability and keeps the chairs perfectly aligned at all times.
Wooden Tête-à-Têtes made from Red Cedar
The wooden Tête-à-Têtes (also known as “duo seats”) are made from Canadian red cedar wood. This timber has several attractive properties: it is naturally resistant to rot and mould and remains pleasantly cool in warm sunshine. A distinctive characteristic of cedar wood is that it gradually develops a silvery-grey patina over time.

What makes Comfy Chair Tête-à-Têtes unique
In appearance, the wooden Tête-à-Têtes from Comfy Chair fully reflect the classic Adirondack style. The characteristic slats and rounded backrest are instantly recognisable within the world of garden furniture. However, Comfy Chairs are far from standard Adirondack chairs. Thanks to thoughtful design adjustments—such as a deeper seat and an ergonomically shaped backrest—they offer exceptional comfort. Naturally, this also applies to our wooden Tête-à-Têtes.
Wooden Tête-à-Tête or another option?
Will you choose a Tête-à-Tête, or do you prefer two separate chairs? Or are you still considering the plastic version? Although the designs are very similar, there are clear differences in everyday use.
Wooden or plastic Tête-à-Tête
The wooden Tête-à-Tête is relatively lightweight. Red cedar is a light wood, which makes it easy to move the bench when needed. A wooden Tête-à-Tête weighs 24 kg, regardless of whether you choose the rounded or straight version. Despite its light weight, red cedar is a strong and durable material that can last for decades with normal use. Do note that the armrests and table are not designed to be sat on. A careless moment can lead to damage. Another advantage of the wooden Tête-à-Tête is that cedar wood stays cool in the sun. Maintenance requirements are low, although slightly higher than for plastic furniture.
The plastic Tête-à-Têtes have exactly the same shape as the wooden versions, meaning the seating comfort is identical. Plastic offers the benefit of being very easy to clean and virtually maintenance-free—apart from the occasional wash. The plastic Tête-à-Têtes are available in more than ten colours and are extremely robust. As all components are cut from solid plastic sheets, the chairs are exceptionally strong, colourfast, and heavy. A plastic Tête-à-Tête weighs 58 kg, making it less practical to move frequently.
Tête-à-Tête or two separate wooden Comfy Chairs?
Another common comparison is between a Tête-à-Tête and two individual Original Comfy Chairs with a side table. A wooden Tête-à-Tête consists of two Comfy Chairs with a fixed table mounted in between. If flexibility is important to you, two separate chairs with a loose side table may be a better choice. This setup is easier to rearrange, and the table can be folded away when not in use.
The advantage of a Tête-à-Tête lies in its compact design. The table fits neatly between the chairs, unlike separate side tables, meaning less space is required. And of course, a Tête-à-Tête simply looks inviting and sociable in any garden setting.
Assembling wooden Tête-à-Têtes
1. Construction kit
You will receive three cardboard boxes containing all components and fixings for the two chairs and the table. With the help of clear instructions and an assembly video, you can put the duo seat together yourself. It takes about an afternoon and is perfectly manageable for most people.
2. Partially assembled
Prefer a quicker setup? You can also order the Tête-à-Tête partially assembled. For a small additional charge, the furniture arrives largely pre-assembled, with only a few parts left to connect—simple and straightforward.
3. Fully assembled
If you would rather avoid tools altogether, you can order the duo seat fully assembled. Please note that transport costs are higher, as the furniture is too large for standard parcel delivery. Fully assembled orders can be requested via our Customer Service team, who will be happy to discuss transport costs with you.
